Bio-Gas Technologies, LLC:  Rotary Biomass Dryer Patent Issued in 2006

How does the Rotary Biomass Dryer work with sawdust and other biomass materials?

  • Materials enter a tube where a rotating, threaded shaft picks up the material and moves it along the interior of the tube and against the outside diameter of the threaded shaft.  Towards the outgoing end of the tube and shaft unit, the material is compressed and heated at which time water is first removed as a liquid and then as steam.  The wood chips are squeezed and heated to about 225 degrees F.

What will the Rotary Biomass Dryer do?

  • The Rotary Biomass Dryer will remove 30% to 35% of the moisture in the wood or biomass in a single pass.
  • The official balance of energy consumed by the Dryer is 750 BTUs’ per pound of water removed.
  • Wood chips and biomass materials will experience a 15% to 20% increase in caloric content.
  • Particle size is reduced maximizing surface area to volume ratio, thereby improving down stream efficiency for further drying or combustion.
  • Materials that pass through the dryer will leave at a temperature of 212 to 250 F.

The heart of the Rotary Biomass Dryer is it’s unique compression ring that allows steam and biomass to exit under pressure.  This patented process allows the dryer to accept materials that are of different size and shape.  Tension on the compression ring can be adjusted to accommodate different biomass moisture contents.

  • In a single pass through The Rotary Dryer 30% to 45% of the total water content in the biomass material will be extracted.
  • Materials are heated through without burning off volatiles contained in your hog fuel or other biomass materials.
  • Rotary Biomass Dryer operates on 1/3 the energy of most other types of dryers presently on the market.

The Rotary Biomass Dryer can be scaled to run from one US ton an hour to 20 US tons an hour.  It produces clean steam that evaporates.  With wood or biomass that is over 50% moisture content some moisture will be removed in the form of hot water.  Biomass will continue to expel steam until it reaches ambient temperatures.
